Matching Family Swimwear Australia — Rashies, Swim Shorts & More | Bronte Co

You've seen the photos. Family at the beach, everyone in coordinating prints, the kids actually smiling for once. It looks like a magazine shoot, but it's just a regular Tuesday at the rock pool.

Matching family swimwear used to be one of those things that sounded fun in theory but was impossible in practice. You'd find kids' rashies in a cool print but nothing in adult sizes. Or the men's shorts would match the boys' but there was nothing for the girls. You'd end up buying from three different brands and hoping the colours were close enough.

That's exactly why we started making matching swimwear sets at Bronte Co. Same print, every size, everyone matches. No hunting across different shops to cobble something together.

Why matching family swimwear actually took off

We thought it would be a novelty. Something people bought for one holiday photo and then forgot about. We were completely wrong.

It turns out parents love it for reasons we didn't expect. The biggest one? It makes the kids easy to spot at the beach or pool. When your three-year-old is wearing the same bright print as everyone else in your family, you can pick them out in a crowd instantly. A few of our customers have actually told us this was the main reason they bought matching sets — not for photos, for safety.

The second reason is simpler: kids think it's hilarious. Something about matching Dad's shorts makes a five-year-old absolutely lose it with excitement. And when the kids are excited about putting their swimmers on, the whole getting-ready-for-the-beach process gets about ten times easier.

The photo thing is real too, obviously. We see tagged photos from our customers constantly and the matching shots are always the best ones. Not because they're styled or posed, but because everyone's actually having a good time. There's something about matching that puts the whole family in a good mood.

What's available in matching family swimwear

When we say matching, we mean the full set. Here's what we offer in coordinating prints:

Men's board shorts. Proper swim shorts that look good in and out of the water. Not those baggy basketball-length things from the surf shops. Our men's shorts sit above the knee, have a comfortable elastic waist, and dry quickly.

Boys' board shorts. Same print as Dad's, sized from toddler up. Same quality, same fit, just smaller.

Women's swimsuits. One-piece and two-piece options in the same family prints. Designed for actually swimming in, not just lying by the pool (though they're good for that too).

Girls' swimwear. Matching swimsuits for the girls, same prints as Mum's.

Rashies. Matching rash vests for the whole family. UPF 50+ sun protection in the same prints. These are probably our most popular matching item because they're practical and they make the matching look effortless — everyone in the same rashie at the beach is an instant photo opportunity.

How to match without looking try-hard

The number one concern people have about matching family swimwear is looking too matchy-matchy. Like you're a cult or you're trying too hard.

Here's the trick: you don't need everyone in the exact same item. Mix it up. Dad in the board shorts, Mum in a one-piece, kids in rashies — all in the same print. Same print, different pieces. It looks coordinated rather than identical, which is the sweet spot.

The other option is matching the kids and letting the parents wear something complementary but not identical. Boys matching Dad in board shorts, girls matching Mum in a swimsuit. Or just the kids matching each other while the parents wear solid colours that coordinate.

There's no wrong way to do it. The point is having fun with it, not stressing about whether everyone's outfit is pixel-perfect.

The father-son matching thing

This deserves its own section because it's become a huge category for us. Father-son matching swim trunks are one of our bestsellers, and it's not even close.

Dads are into it. That surprised us initially, but it makes sense. There aren't many fashion moments where dads get to be part of the fun. Matching board shorts with your son is a low-effort, high-reward way to be a fun dad without actually having to do anything different.

We've got a dedicated father-son range with prints designed specifically for boys and their dads — things like fishing prints, surfboard designs, and tropical patterns that work for adults and kids without being too juvenile or too boring.

The matching fishing shirts are the other big one. Father and son in matching fishing shirts on the boat? That photo gets framed. Every time.

What about matching for bigger families?

The more people matching, the better it looks — and the funnier the photo. We regularly have families of five or six all kitted out in the same print. Some of our prints run across men's, women's, boys', and girls' in every size from toddler to XXL.

The only challenge with bigger families is making sure you order everything at the same time. Popular prints do sell out in certain sizes, and there's nothing more frustrating than getting matching swimmers for four kids and then finding the fifth size is gone. Our tip: order early, especially before school holidays and Christmas.

When to wear matching family swimwear

Basically any time you're near water as a family:

Beach holidays. This is the classic. A week at the coast with everyone in the same print. Bonus: you only need to pack one "theme" worth of swimmers, and every photo from the trip looks cohesive.

Swimming lessons. Matching rashies at Saturday morning swim class is an easy win.

Pool parties and birthday parties. If the party is at a pool or beach, matching swimmers are the move.

Australia Day, Christmas Day, school holiday trips. Any family gathering near water.

Family photos. Professional or just on the phone. Matching swimwear at the beach is genuinely the easiest way to get a good family shot without hiring a photographer or stressing about outfits.

What to look for in quality matching swimwear

Not all matching sets are created equal. The cheap stuff from fast fashion sites looks fine in the photo but falls apart after a few washes. Here's what to check:

UPF rating. Rashies especially should be UPF 50+. This is non-negotiable for Australian sun. All Bronte Co rashies are UPF 50+ rated.

Chlorine resistance. If your kids are in the pool regularly, the fabric needs to handle chlorine without fading or stretching. This is where cheaper brands fall down — the print fades after a few pool sessions.

Fabric quality. Look for 4-way stretch fabric that holds its shape. Cheap swimwear goes baggy fast, especially on kids who are in and out of the water all day.

Print consistency. The whole point of matching is that the print actually matches across sizes. Some brands scale the print up for adult sizes, so the pattern looks different between the kids' and adults' versions. Our prints are designed to look consistent across all sizes.

Size range. Make sure the brand offers your full family range. There's no point starting with a brand that only does kids, then having to find something "close enough" for the parents from somewhere else.

The prints to watch this season

We drop new prints regularly and they tend to sell out fast. Our bold, graphic prints are always the most popular for matching sets — they photograph well and they're easy to spot at the beach.

Check the full range and grab your sizes while they're in stock. We'd hate for you to end up with four matching and one odd one out.
